Working with the environmental charity Groundwork London Adam and Andrée designed and delivered the Lyric Theatre Roof Garden in Hammersmith. Since 2010 Davies White Ltd have acted as consultant landscape architects to the theatre. The roof garden is on the first floor of the Lyric Hammersmith, overlooking Lyric Square just off King Street. Originally a cold uninviting paved area with random tables and out of scale beer garden style umbrellas.
The terrace has been transformed into a new inviting green roof terrace garden. The design supports and strengthens the theatre's artistic vision by being contemporary and architecturally exciting, complementing the Lyric's modern, eclectic artistic programme.
The Lyric Theatre set the brief to design and deliver a landmark green oasis within the concrete urban jungle of Hammersmith, London. The project funded by HammersmithLondon and Marks & Spencer’s. The space had to be fully accessible to all the public and not just theatre goers and also feature an ‘eye catching’ feature to draw visitors to the garden from Hammersmith Tube Station.
Jessica Hepburn, chief executive of the Lyric Hammersmith, said: “It has been fantastic to work with such inspirational designers to transform our outdoor terrace into an iconic, oxygen-giving sea of green in the concrete jungle of central Hammersmith.”
The garden won several awards which included a Landscape Institute Design, BALI Landscape Award, Horticulture Week Design Award and is listed in Elle Decors Top Ten Most Unusual and Enchanting Gardens.
