Accessible rooftop garden bringing nature, culture, and community together above the heart of Hammersmith, London.
HammersmithLondon Roof Garden at the Lyric Theatre, London.
Working with the environmental charity Groundwork London Davies White transformed a neglected, roof terrace at the Lyric Theatre into a thriving public roof garden, kindly funded by HammersmithLondon BID and Marks & Spencer's. The £200,000 project created a fully accessible, nature-rich destination above King Street, overlooking Lyric Square. The design features lush planting, mature trees, raised planters, pergola canopies, secluded seating, subtle lighting, and wildlife-supporting sustainable materials; offering a peaceful escape in the heart of Hammersmith

Over a decade on, the roof garden continues to thrive as a community asset, offering a green haven above the bustle of Hammersmith. As part of the annual Lyric in the Square festival, the garden becomes a stage for yoga sessions, pop-up wellbeing events, and outdoor performances. In summer 2023, it hosted alfresco yoga led by YogaBox and Lululemon, and served as a tranquil retreat for participants of the Young Lyric programme. This pioneering arts and education initiative engages 7–25 year olds from across West London in creative learning, theatre-making, and performance.

Within its first year, the garden was listed in Elle Decor’s World’s Top Ten Most Unusual and Enchanting Public Gardens, and won multiple accolades including a Landscape Institute Award, BALI Design Award, and Horticulture Week Design Award.
To mark its tenth anniversary, the Lyric Fest community event celebrated the space’s success with live music. Adam White and Patricia Bench (Director, Hammersmith BID) led a celebratory toast to this inspiring green space, now firmly woven into the cultural and social fabric of Hammersmith.
