PROJECTS

A legacy of the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games – Cuningar Loop is a wild woodland escape where adventure leads the play.

Cuningar Loop Country Park

Davies White led the landscape architectural services for Cuningar Loop Country Park in Glasgow - overseeing feasibility, design, and delivery from 2012 to 2016. The project included the remediation of 15 hectares of former landfill and quarry, our work delivered woodland trails, riverside boardwalks, adventure play, bike‑skills areas, bouldering, outdoor gym and picnic meadows, all part of the Commonwealth Games legacy project.

The project transformed 50 acres of derelict land into a vibrant green space, delivering a lasting legacy of the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games. Over 15,000 trees were planted, 3km of fully accessible paths created, and 1.5km of riverside boardwalk opened. The park includes Scotland’s first outdoor bouldering facility and attracts over 300,000 visitors annually. It won a Landscape Institute and BALI Community Engagement Award.

Completed: 2016  Client:  Forestry Commission Scotland  Budget: £5.7m

The design was shaped through extensive community engagement involving local residents, schools, youth groups, and stakeholders from Rutherglen, Dalmarnock, and Glasgow’s East End. Co-design workshops, walkabouts, and creative sessions helped identify priorities such as accessible play, woodland adventure, and nature connection. Young people influenced features like bouldering stones and natural play elements. Led by Forestry and Land Scotland in partnership with Clyde Gateway, the phased approach allowed ideas to be tested and refined. This collaborative process ensured the park became an inclusive, vibrant green space and a lasting legacy of the 2014 Commonwealth Games.
