George's Field Playscape, Hanwell, London Borough of Ealing

Info

Working with the environmental charity Groundwork London, Adam and Andrée designed and delivered this game changing nature play space in 2010. It won a Landscape Institute Design Award and has been used as a best practice case study by various organisations. It continues to showcase the potential good quality design and an engaged process can deliver.

The project replaced a rundown traditional playground of metal equipment and wetpour rubber surface. Working with the same contractor that delivered the RHS Gold Medal winning show garden, the Playscape at Hanwell, was designed to be a home for the show garden as well as an opportunity to develop the playful landscape principals in a real setting. The outcome was a Landscape Institute award winning playspace described by the LI award judges as a ‘beautiful piece of design in its own right’. the centre of the district of Hanwell, it helped to bring cohesion to the community, who continue to celebrate its place by holding regular events in the space. The friends group that was formed to contribute towards looking after the space, have continued to report that the space is as popular today as the day it opened nearly four years ago. The site was used by CABE Space to illustrate best practice in play space design and by the Landscape Institute to demonstrate the value of investment in quality public space design.
